sawatdi
สวัสดี
“สวัสดี” (sawatdi) is the most common, versatile, and polite greeting in the Thai language. Derived from Sanskrit, it literally conveys wishes for 'goodness,' 'well-being,' or 'prosperity.' It can be used at any time of day (morning, afternoon, or evening) and is appropriate for both formal and informal situations. It is almost always accompanied by a 'wai,' a traditional Thai gesture of respect where the palms are pressed together in a prayer-like fashion.
“สวัสดี” is a complete and fixed greeting phrase that does not conjugate or change form based on tense, number, or gender. It functions as a standalone utterance.
While 'สวัสดี' is inherently polite, speakers often add gender-specific politeness particles to enhance formality: 'ครับ' (khrap) for male speakers and 'ค่ะ' (kha) for female speakers, resulting in 'สวัสดีครับ' or 'สวัสดีค่ะ'.
